| EX LIBRIS - BOOKPLATES
(lat.
“Ex Libris”, ex = from
and libris = books)
A
bookplate is a small printed
image on paper made by wood carving, engraving, lithography or another
technique and nowadays also as a stamp. A bookplate bears the name of
the owner
and decorates the first page of a book.
Since
the invention of book
printing in 1440 books have been available to a broader readership. At
the same
time the desire grew to mark ones own book. Soon the first bookplates
were
created as a small graphic piece of art, often by a famous artist such
as
Albrecht Duerer, Lucas Cranach the Elder etc.
Nowadays
the bookplate is not
as widespread as it used to be and has become a special item. It is the
perfect
personalized gift.
